The Playground

What is the routine on the playground?
Your teacher will lead you out of the building and onto the playground. You’ll have a 25 minute recess, but it will feel like longer.

At the ring of a bell you’ll go in to the cafeteria with the rest of your classmates.

What are the different play areas?
There are three play areas on the playground. We call them the Red Top, the Green Top, and the Blue Top. Older kids play on the Red Top.

There is also a field and a hiking trail. Kindergarteners play on their own playground.

What equipment is available?
The playground has slides, swings, monkey bars, and exercising equipment.  There are soccer goals, football posts, and a basketball court.

Kids bring balls from home, and you can usually play too.  There are soccer balls, footballs, basketballs, and jump ropes.

What games do people play?
We play sports, like football and soccer, or other outdoor activities.  You might play tag or basketball, or run around the fitness trail, which is a quarter mile long.

We also play on the swings and on the slides.  You can play how fast you can go on the monkey bars. Girls sometimes play hand games. Or some people just loaf around.

What are the playground rules?
The main rules are: no hitting, no punching, no fighting of any kind. Play nice with everyone. No tackle football. No pushing someone when they are on the swing. If it’s muddy outside, they won’t let you go on the grass.

What do I do if someone is mean to me?
Walk away from them if you can.
If he or she meant to do it, you should tell someone. On the playground, tell a supervisor or a peace mediator.

What are peace mediators?
Peace mediators are kids on the playground that help you. They help you be nice to each other. When you get in a fight, they solve the problems.

Ask the mediator for help and he or she will work it out with the person that was mean to you.  If a mediator helps me, I can do anything!
