green top How are international students treated at University Elementary
International students are treated nicely in University Elementary. You are treated like you are welcomed here.

Everybody will be nice to you and helpful because you don’t know English. We have friends even if we are different.

Friends are also very helpful. You are treated so you can understand English and know what to do.

How will the teachers help me?
f you don’t understand something, you can raise your hand and the teacher will explain to you.

Teachers won’t make fun of you and will help you by telling you what you should do in the classroom.

The teachers will try to explain everything very carefully, or if they need to they will draw a picture to explain.

They will also try to get an interpreter. If there is a person that speaks your language, you two can help each other. Look at the list of languages spoken at University School to see how many there are!

How will I learn English?
There is a class called English as a New Language (ENL) for kids that do not know English. That will help a lot.

Your family might help. When I started, I did language arts homework with my mom. Now I can do language arts homework by myself.

You will also learn by listening to other people. You can listen and try to understand what people who are speaking English are saying.

Speak with American friends, and memorize a lot of words. If you’re wrong, it’s okay. Because you should learn English like that.

How should I behave at an American school?
You should behave just like the way you behaved at your other school at you original country. You just have to be nice to everyone and do what your teacher tells you to do.

You should respect all the rules and listen to teachers and staff. You shouldn’t be noisy in the school, and you shouldn’t fight with other students either.

Use good words, not bad words. Learn from your mistakes and try not to be a bully.
