Chess Club
Essential Information
University Elementary Chess Club and Team meetings are on Thursdays after school. The UES chess club is open to all interested students from 2nd grade and above.
Meeting time for non-ALPS students is Thursdays 3:15pm to 4:15pm.
ALPS students may attend either between 2:15pm to 3:15pm or 2:15pm to 4:15pm.
This year both chess club and competitive chess team meetings will take place in the same room between 3:15pm to 4:15pm.
Scholarships are provided to families based on financial need.

Other features of our chess club include
- In spring, 2008 we have 52 children, 8 teachers and additional parent volunteers that meet regularly every Thursday. The teachers are Jeff Melton, Jim Brown, Michael Douglas, Eddy Labin, Jason Fried, Alea Ford, Alexander A. and Stephen Z.
- One of the groups in the club is a girls-only group of 8 girls taught by Alea Ford, a former Indiana State Girls Chess Champion.
- Most of the chess teachers play competitively in USCF (United State Chess Federation) rated tournament and are among the top rated players in Bloomington area.
- The University Elementary School chess team participates regularly in USCF-rated scholastic chess tournaments held at Indianapolis, Terre Haute and Anderson. About 20 students participated in open competitions this year.
- Between September 2007 and March 2008, the chess team has won 10
team awards and more than 20 individual awards. - The most recent trophies are from the Indiana Regional Team Tournament
and the Indiana State Final Team Tournaments sponsored by the Scholastic
Chess of Indiana held on March 1st and March 29th, 2008. See Event Results
for details. - In March 2007, the UES chess club hosted the first USCF-rated scholastic tournament in Bloomington. About 70 players from various Indiana schools competed according to USCF regulation in this tournament. We will be hosting another tournament on April 26th this year.
